What’s New in ICANN’s Next Round? Key Changes Explained

ICANN’s Next Round is expected to officially launch in April 2026, offering the first opportunity to apply for new TLDs since 2012. Even better, ICANN has listened to feedback from the previous round and introduced significant changes to make the application process more streamlined, accessible, and transparent. Here’s what you need to know about the improvements.

Smarter Contention Resolution

When multiple applicants apply for the same TLD string, contention can arise. The Next Round introduces a more efficient approach to address contention that gives applicants more flexibility and control.

You can now include a backup string in your application. Think of it as a plan B: if your first-choice string faces competition, you’ll be able to decide whether to switch to your backup option.

The benefit: Less administrative hassle, faster decisions, and more strategic options. Your RSP can help you research potential conflicts and choose a strong backup that aligns with your goals.

Better Support for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs)

IDNs allow domain names to use non-ASCII characters, opening the door for TLDs in languages like Arabic, Mandarin, Cyrillic, and more. The Next Round makes applying for IDNs more straightforward for applicants:

Language variants: You can now apply for language variants of your chosen string where characters are deemed interchangeable between languages. Plus, if you’re applying for a variant of a string from the 2012 round, you’ll get priority processing.

The benefit: If you’re considering an IDN application, the improved process makes them more accessible than ever. Your RSP will be able to provide you with the information you need to get started.

Streamlined RSP Evaluation

Here’s a change that benefits everyone: the new RSP Evaluation Program makes technical evaluation faster and more cost-effective for TLD applicants. Instead of reevaluating the RSP with each TLD application, RSPs undergo a single comprehensive pre-approval evaluation that covers all future applications.

Once an RSP is pre-approved, they can support as many applications as needed without going through the process again. This means a more efficient application process and more confidence in your RSP’s capabilities from day one. ICANN will publish its list of pre-approved RSPs in January 2026.

The benefit: You can choose an RSP knowing their technical infrastructure is already validated. Identity Digital has applied for evaluation as a Main, DNS, and DNSSEC RSP. We’re committed to meeting ICANN’s highest standards so you can move through the application process smoothly.

More Resources for Applicants

ICANN offers several programs to make the Next Round more accessible:

Applicant Support Program (ASP): The ASP has been enhanced to assist a larger pool of applicants. If eligible, you can access training materials, capacity development resources, and even funding support. The program is open until December 19, 2025, so there’s still time to apply.

Predictability Framework: Clearer guidance on ICANN policies and processes means fewer surprises and more confidence as you navigate your application.

Formalized brand requirements: While brand TLDs now require trademark validation and an additional fee, the process is more clearly defined, making it easier to plan and budget accordingly.

What This Means for Your Application

These changes reflect ICANN’s commitment to learning from the 2012 round and creating a better experience for applicants. Whether you’re applying for the first time or returning from the previous round, you’ll find a more transparent, efficient, and supportive process.

The key is preparation. Take time to review ICANN’s Applicant Guidebook, understand your options, and choose an RSP partner who can guide you through each stage of the process.
